Established in 1608 and now branded under the chain, Best Western, it gets American tourists by the coach-load. In its 400-year history it can't have seen a busier time than the autumn of 1795. "Do you get many people looking for gold around here?" I ask the woman on reception. She regards me in the way one might a dangerous dog.
